UV light imaging

In the machine vision industry, UV LED light is used for UV-reflected imaging applications and for fluorescent applications. The latter is the most commonly used.

UV fluorescence
Fluorescence is the property of some substances that emit light when they absorb radiation that is usually invisible. The radiation is absorbed at a specific wavelength and then re-emitted at a longer wavelength. UV fluorescence is used, for example, to make glue, ink, coatings or other materials with UV-optical brighteners visible.

UV reflected imaging
In reflected UV imaging applications, UV light is applied to the object and captured using a monochrome or colour camera that is UV sensitive. One of the most common uses for UV imaging is to detect scratches on polished or highly specular surfaces. Another application with reflected UV light is the detection of surface contamination, such as traces of oil or grease. UV light tends to be absorbed by organic materials.

Detect product defects
Although UV fluorescence imaging is used in many applications, reflected UV imaging, where no fluorescence occurs, can also reveal product defects. Here again the UV light is used, and the reflected UV light is collected. For example, consider an application to detect air pockets on product labels. Here, UV lighting can be used to enhance any air pockets that may be present. Or when inspecting printed circuit boards and solder joints, the strong reflection is advantageous. Defects, scratches or functions are then clearly visible. And when inspecting fiber optics and fibres, the short-wave light can inspect the junction because it reflects very well and only glows diffusely.

Our solutions
All our solutions are designed and developed in-house. Important points such as high accuracy in UV radiation and wavelength are taken into account. Some solutions require a lens so that the UV radiation can be concentrated in a targeted place. Or for an even irradiation of the surface.
